Video games often have a bad reputation among non-players; however, dedicated gaming actually comes with numerous benefits. Here are just some of the many benefits of playing video games.
1. Improving memory - Researchers don’t know why video games improve memory, but studies have found that individuals who play video games, particularly 3D games, improve their memory by up to 12 percent.
2. Overcoming dyslexia - Playing video games requires a great deal of focus, especially when playing action games. Following a session of heavy gaming, people with dyslexia read faster and more accurately. Researchers believe the improvement is a result of the mind’s increased attention span.
3. Slowing the aging process - As the mind ages, it becomes less able to complete certain cognitive tasks. However, playing just 10 hours of a video game with memory, puzzle, or problem-solving components can delay age-related mental decline by several years.
4. Reducing depression and stress - As many regular gamers know, video games are a great way of decreasing stress levels after a long day. However, the hobby also reduces rates of depression among regular gamers. The reason behind this is that video games distract the mind from stressful or depressing thoughts.
